August 17 is our last Welcome New Members Evening of the season and we hope to see plenty new and long term members! August 17th has some interesting water related events; Seattle’s Pike Place Market, close to the water, opened on August 17, 1907; Mae West was born on August 17, 1893, and the inflatable body hugging life preserver that saved thousands of lives was named the Mae West. The first international boat race also took place on August 17 in 1869, occurring on the River Thames between Oxford and Harvard. This is a really interesting story and I will put more about it in the August Hailer. I also learned of a rowing contest in Paris in 1867 for four-oared shells on the Seine; a team from Saint John, New Brunswick won and returned to Canada as national heroes and world champions.
But back to the present and looking forward to another enjoyable evening at Kits. The weather forecast for August 17th is for sun with some clouds and 23 degrees. Ed and Nelson have a lovely meal planned.
The cost is $17.50 per person, cash payable to the caterer.
